Description:

This 1967 Friederich Classical Guitar and was built in the same year that Daniel Friederich was judged in the Craftsmanship Competition in Paris against Bouchet and Fleta. The rankings were kept secret, but in Daniel Friederich’s words, “I did not come in last.” It is as close as one can come to Friederich’s acclaimed 1967 entry to the Paris competition.

Daniel Friederich began making guitars in the late 1950’s. He was a student of guitar at the time, and could not afford an expensive instrument. Through his friend, the renowned Robert Bouchet, from whom only 156 guitars are known, Friederich learned the art of guitar making.

The guitar is lightly built with single sides, the style Friederich used before shifting to cedar. The guitar has a clear voice with wonderfully rich overtones. It is indescribably good and singular in its voice. It makes even simple Sor and Giuliani Etudes sound noble.

The guitar was wonderfully and expertly restored in 2015. The well known luthier who did the restorations commented that it is one of the finest sounding guitars he has ever encountered. This opinion has been voiced by renowned players and composers, as well.

Daniel Friederich is still living, though he has stopped making guitars due to his advanced age. Toward the end of his career, sometime after 2015, he was making as few as four guitars a year, usually for close friends and longtime acquaintances! The guitar here is from the beginning of his storied career, at a time when he was firmly establishing his reputation.
