Description:

This is a 1976 Oribe Calidad Suprema Guitar. The guitar has a piano-like quality in its sound. It is voluminous, firm, with great sustain. In a testimony to the instrument’s mechanical precision, if it is tuned to perfect pitch, one is rewarded as it literally leaps in volume and in the presence of overtones. It is a real masterpiece in perfect condition with no cracks. The sides and back are made of highly figured, stunning CSA Rosewood.

Jose Oribe built contemporaneously to Jose Ramirez III, Velazquez and Robert Ruck and is counted among the most talented luthiers in North America. He began building guitars after a career in aircraft maintenance and repair, and his attention to detail and craftsmanship reflect his experiences from that earlier, exacting career. Interestingly, he built guitars together with his wife Juanita, who often finished the guitars. This was interestingly the same as the partnership between Domingo Esteso and his wife. Jose Oribe stopped building to care for her in their later years, after she became ill.

Jose Oribe, in addition to his wonderful instruments, wrote a book on guitars and guitar making entitled “The Fine Guitar”. It is well worth finding and reading! Jose Oribe’s guitars are also often discussed in guitar forums such as Delcamp.
